Red Rountree

Think?

Really, THINK?

What will be your last swan song?

Red’s was robbing banks at 91

Crazy old man some would say

But

Some would say anything to downplay

His Jesse James ways

Red followed the law for most of his life

Then in the end

The law followed him

Blue-lighted

Pulled over

His hands stretched high in the air

Some would say Red

Was wasting his last years

Robbing relentlessly running

From the long arm of the law

But

Some say things they know nothing about

Yes, his last breaths were taken

Inside the cold walls of a prison

Not dying a free man

Yet, some know nothing of what it is to truly be free

Never stepping out of

Their self-created

Comforted jail cells

Living

In the safety

Of a boxed-in reality

Far from living at all

Red may have died locked away behind bars

But he lived more than some will ever know

Yes

Some prefer shadowboxing

Within their perfect life boundaries

Fetching the morning paper and waving to the neighbors

Robbing not banks but something far worse

Robbing themselves of a life truly lived

Never knowing adventure

Fear or excitement

Never stopping to see

Something as simple as a sunset

Wasting away in the safety of their shell

Retracting like snails at the first signs of different

Yes, time wasted not living your life

Has to be

The biggest crime of them all!!!

Fingerprints of Yosemite

The kings and queens of Yosemite

Who’ve climbed her mighty walls

Of stone

Will live on forever

Within her legends

Within her whispering winds

Blowing high above the valley floor

Robbins and Harding

Bridwell and Bachar

Fingerprints of Yosemite, fingerprints on stone

Pushing ever higher

Into the unknown

Johnson and Kauk

Potter and Caldwell

Rutherford and Davis

Harrington and Hill

Fingerprints of Yosemite, fingerprints on stone

Their upward assent

Their attack on the walls

Going up, up, up

The vertical pathway

With its

Sun-splashed granite rock face

Growing

Into a cloud covered tower of the sky

Breathtaking for the beholder!!!

Chalk covered hands

Gripping with fingers of steel

Quick clicks of the Quick Draws

Lifelines when something goes wrong

Fingerprints of Yosemite, fingerprints on stone

These masters of the high walls

I believe

Are folks

That have never gone halfway with anything

All the way people, or nothing at all

Fingerprints of Yosemite, fingerprints on stone

Here For The Stay

It seems only a handful

Are here for the stay

Never wasting their

Moment in time

Their

Many moments of madness made possible

By actually living their life so alive

Not wasting it

Watching it drift by

With what ifs

And what could have been

Maybe this is why I love them so?

Yet, they’re almost always looked upon

By the status quo

As wasting it all

For living their life to the fullest

Yes, some are here for the stay

Hell, we all are, I guess

It’s what we do while we’re here that matters

Yes

Guessing

Is all we’re ever really doing anyways

From the genius to the dullard

No one has any real proof of anything

Yet

Most everyone has explanations for it all

And all believe their’s is the right one

All the way down to the

Weatherman whispering which way the wind will blow

Tomorrow is all still just

A flip of the coin

A coin flipping

End over end over end

And

Again and again and again

Today is all we can ever be sure of

And it changes by the minute

So live it!!!

Two Dragonflies

As I drove

Into the parking lot

Of the skate park

I saw the charred remains

Of a burned out Jeep

Torched down to the bare bones

Flaked paint and shattered glass

Covered the ground around its outside

Like an oily tie-dyed junkyard roadway

It sparkled in the first rays of light

Its skeleton steel frame

Was all that was left

A fate Galileo could’ve encountered himself

If he continued

Going against the status quo

For

The status quo

Is almost always right in their own minds

Never wrong

They ever could be

And at all times

Certainly concerned with where they fit in

To the ladder leading to their own believed greatness

Kings, some believe they’ve become

Yes

I’ve seen many who thought they were royalty

Come and go in this game of skate

In time their bodies betray them

Their eyes become wide with shock

When their worshipers no longer worship them

They’ve moved on to a new god

And

The self-proclaimed kings

Never realized their kingdom was merely geographic

In nature

And that once

Oh so big world of theirs

Now has boundaries that are shrinking

As I rest on the curb

I ponder all of these things and more

I look out at a discarded diaper

Ten feet from a garbage can

Flies swarm its outside

Oh how we’ve evolved!!!

Darwin might theorize today

We’ve started to trek backwards

Soon we’ll be walking on all fours

Two dragonflies fly into one another

Above me

Like two knights jousting

For a roaring crowd’s approval

Yet, I’m no crowd

I’m just one

But they still put up a noble fight indeed

Clashing in sound

Like a whispering wing beating orchestra

Playing some

Harry Partch microtonal musical masterpiece

Most would not hear them at all

Over the noise of the city

But I hear them

And watch

Till they fade into the distance

Billie Holiday

Rain falling on this tin roof

Sounds like

Magic falling from Zodiac Stars

Billie Holiday’s voice

Plays through these round speakers

It’s about as close to

A perfect ending

On a long hot day

As one could ask for

My memories move through music melodies

As I listen and see her face in my mind

Her smile said it all

Without having to say anything

Gardenias dressing her hair

The horn section is

Blowing beautifully behind Billie

Notes intertwine with notes

Stitching each verse together

With record needles

Following fine lines

On slow spinning vinyl

Raw open emotion

A voice wrapped with every tear

She ever shed

Every love she ever lost

Every love she ever found

Keep singing, Billie

Keep falling, rain

Soon

I will be asleep

Singing songs of slight shallow snoring

Until the morning sun wakes me

And

I start a new day

Once more

Yes, Billie and raindrops falling

Are not a bad way to end a long hot day

7.2 Billion

Red Light Theater always has

A captive audience

Cast members

Hold cue cards

For you the director to read

“Will work for food”

I guess we all work for food in

Some way or another

Just remember

Hustle the homeless Hustler before he hustles you!!!

But

Whatever you do

Don’t look them in the eye

You might see your soul

He’s one of the 7.2 Billion people on the planet

You know?

Standing on the corner of your city

Or frozen to death

On a bench in Central Park

Or her

Stepping off of the city bus in the rain

Plastic bags stretched tight with can goods

A warm salty meal

I guess is on the menu tonight

And then there’s those

Meeting for brunch after tennis

Or those

Building the next city high-rise

Or those

Two

The hooker standing at the top

Of the interstate bridge

And the cop pleading for her to step down

Her tears falling onto the cars speeding below

With drivers just wanting to go home
